Apparently major league teams buy "magic mud" to rub on new baseballs before they use them.

I will refrain from speculating on the nature of the added organic material:

He screens the mud several times and adds an organic substance which he will not divulge, then ships it within a day of receiving an order.

There was a show on one of the Discovery Channels, I think, about strange jobs, and one of them was about the guy whose job it is to rub the baseballs for some team. "So you have a counterpart on each of the other teams?" "Yup."

Yeah, the show is Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. He goes out with the guy who produces the mud to collect it (blindfolded in the car on the way there), strain it, and package it, and then in a later segment he interviews one of the equipment boys who does the actual rubbing of the 12 dozen or so baseballs used for each game.

Dirty Jobs is an amusing show, although this is definitely one of the cushier dirty jobs he has taken on. Some of the other episodes are quite cringeworthy.
