28th-Mar-2009 09:39 pm - east coast bias?
I'm watching Stanford play Ohio State in the Women's basketball sweet sixteen game. At halftime, about what a great game one of the Ohio State players was having. The intro coming into the second half was, "Stanford is trying to make it back to the Final Four, but Ohio State is on fire tonight." And then they had some sponsored half time adjustment where they showed Stanford having trouble covering Ohio State's star, and what they need to do in the second half.

Would you think, from that, that Stanford was ahead or behind at the half? Stanford ended the half leading by two, which is not a big lead by any means (though better than leading by one, which is worse than being tied, evidently). But they're winning.

I suppose you could argue that Ohio State is overperforming as a 3 seed keeping up with a 2 seed, especially since Stanford was ranked number 2 in the country in both polls but somehow ended up with a 2 seed anyway. Ok, fine, but wouldn't you say that at some point? Instead all the coverage made it sound like Ohio State was winning and Stanford needed a comeback.

(Note: I could be biased. Also, 4 minutes into the second half, Stanford's opened its lead to 7.)
