Someone kept track of every tank of gas he bought since 1979, and plotted the results. Also included on the graph are the CPI's average cost of gas in a city, which tracks very closely to his recorded results, and the price if you adjust for inflation.

Interestingly, the inflation-adjusted price of gas today is right about the price in 1980.
